VSTER

VisionX V4
NAME

vster − locates the sternum from a bone map.

SYNOPSIS

vster if=<chestmap> cz=<carinaz> tr=<trachea> zres=<zres> of=<sternum>

DESCRIPTION

vster segments the sternum from a bone map which may contain sternum, vertebrae and other bones but not the ribs. Since in a bone map, the sternum is always in the anterior part of the body and is usually very far away from other bony structures in the map, vster just searches in the anterior part of the bone map and all bony structures close to the middle of the CT scan (as opposed to left and right like the two lungs) are considered as sternum. Sternum is segmented from the beginning of trachea to the last image slice. For

the purpose of heart segmentation, if sternum cannot be detected, the sternum in the previous slice is projected down. This only happens in regions close to or below diaphragm.

CONSTRAINT

Input file if is a bone map with no ribs. cz is the z coordinate of the carina. tr is the z coordinate of the first slice containing trachea. zres is the z resolution of the scan. of is the segmented sternum labeled as 49.
